    Hello Aisha Franz,

I’m a student in master of comics at Esa St-Luc in Brussels, and I am making a master thesis about: What hypothesis of ways between the unconscious to the conscious of the author during the process of creation of a comic?

It’s a subject really important to me -as a comics reader and comics maker- and I am sure that this Master thesis need opinions from big authors, (and whose work particularly touched me).

In his book Catching the Big Fish: Meditation, Consciousness and Creativity, David Lynch says: “Ideas are like fish. If you want to catch little fish, you can stay in the shallow water. But if you want to catch the big fish, you’ve got to go deeper. Down deep, the fish are more powerful and more pure. They’re huge and abstract. And they’re very beautiful.”

My master thesis promoter, Philippe de Pierpont (who is also the screenwriter of “Paysage après la batch”, Fauve d’or at the Angoulème Festival), told me that for him, to build a story was like descending into oneself -as in a dark mine looking for diamonds, rising to the surface with a gem and carving the diamond. He also told me about the mysterious balance between mastering and letting go of ideas.

If it’s possible, if you have a bit of time, there are 5 questions whose I would like your answers.

-How comes the first (little) things that you make you think ”I should make a story with it”? And why do you think they are strong enough to become a story?

-How would you describe your process of creation? What are the personal paths that you have discovered through experience that connect you to your “unconscious”?

-When you finished to make a comicbook, do you realize that some aspects of your creation are actually talking more about you than you were thinking ? Do you have one or two cases for instance?

If you have any question, you can obviously send me an email and I will answer as soon as possible.

Thanks a lot for taking time to read my mail.

I hope everything is fine for you and around you,

    Best regards,

    Eleonore Marchal
